Iwant to make a strong plea against the conclusion reached by Leber et al1 in their retrospective study about long-term complications of prosthetic incisional hernioplasty. Their analysis of the data shows that polyester mesh (Mersilene) should not be used in the repair of incisional hernias. Their condemnation of the use of polyester mesh prosthesis to repair large incisional hernias is unacceptable to me and certainly to many European surgeons interested in surgery of the abdominal wall.
In this retrospective study the authors erroneously indict Mersilene in comparison with Marlex, Prolene, and Gore-Tex mesh as responsible for many of the early and late complications in abdominal incisional hernioplasties. My method of repair is similar to those used by Jean Rives, MD, Jean B. Flament, MD, Jean P. Palot, MD, and, in the United States, George E. Wantz, MD.
