If you have an intense interest in inflammatory bowel disease, this is the best reference source available. If you are an occasional surgical consultant in this area, this is a wonderful book to have in your institutional library for periodic study. Dr Kirsner and his 70 contributors, primarily from the United States and Canada, present a well-organized approach to the molecular biology of inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract; the etiology, pathogenesis, and clinical aspects of both Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis; the nuances of pathology in these diseases; the medical and surgical treatment that is currently in vogue; and prognostic considerations.

Looking back over the last 25 years since the first edition of this book appeared, it is amazing how up-to-date each volume has been, bringing to us the latest in advancing experimental activity in these diseases as well as the current thinking regarding treatment.
