During residency training or practice, the surgeon is challenged by patients requiring reoperation. These patients have surgical conditions made extremely complex by anatomy altered by previous surgery. Successful treatment requires not only superior operative skill but also, as stated in the forward by Josef E. Fischer, MD, "a system of dealing with complex operative surgery" that should be experiential based and include a thorough knowledge of the underlying anatomy and pathophysiology.
